Phone Update #5

All local, and long distance is now working. If you have a problem with your phone access that has not yet been reported, please send an e-mail to callcenter@huntington.edu or leave a voicemail at 4090. Please include in the information your name, you extension number, and the phone location (building and office number).

My thanks to the Maintenance Department team for their help in getting the water problem in Baker Hall fixed and cleaned up; to John Wagner for the many hours he put in Sunday to get the network back up and identify the phone system problems; to Bob Landon and Jason Boothman for coming up with a creative solution to get power back to our phone equipment; our partners at G3, One Communications, Netwolves, and AT&T for their staying with these problems. I also thank you for your patience.

Phone Update #4

We have verified the inbound long distance is working. We do not yet have outbound long distance working so please, in case of emergency, continue to use the procedure that Susan Stong sent earlier, i.e. contact 911 (dial 9 first if using a campus phone), the Maintenance Department on-call cell number 224-0933, or the campus police at 224-1412. Note that now that local access has been restored you can use campus phones as well as cell phones to place these calls.

Phone System Update #3

Local inbound and outbound calling capabilities have been restored. Outbound long distance to non-800 numbers is not yet functional. Inbound long distance (except to HU 800 numbers) should be working but we are still verifying that.

Our telephone service provider will continue to work on the outbound long distance problem this evening.

Phone Update #2

There is currently no access to the campus operator. We will let you know when that problem is fixed.

The only phone access currently available for campus phones is to other campus phones. You cannot make calls from on campus to off campus numbers (i.e. anything that requires you to enter a 9). In addition, no phone calls placed from off campus to campus phones will connect. They will get an all circuits busy message. We expect the phone companies to be on-site within the next hour. However, we do not know what will be required to fix all the equipment.

Phone System Update #1

Update from Technology Services:

On campus phone communication has been fixed. The residence halls and the Annex should now have phone service. There may be some problems in Baker Hall student rooms. If you are a Baker Hall resident who has been using a campus phone connection in your room (either a college supplied phone or your own phone) please check to see if you have dial tone. If you do not, please respond to this e-mail with your room number and extension.

We still do not have an estimate on when off campus access will be restored. There appears to be significant damage to local and long distance equipment that will have to be replaced. We will provide an update as soon as we know more.

Phone service outage

The campus has reopened following the winter storm, but there have been continued challenges to communication systems. The email system has been fixed following an outage on Sunday. Regarding phone service, the following message was sent to the campus community this morning by Gary Campbell, Director of Technology Services.

A pipe which burst in the basement of Baker Hall early Sunday morning resulted in the shutting down or damaging of some phone equipment and power sources for network equipment. This caused outages of both campus phone service and network service.

A different power source for the network equipment was installed this evening and network access was restored to the residence halls.

The phone equipment requires three telephone service providers to evaluate the damage and determine repair actions. The providers will not be available until Monday morning. The impact of this equipment being out of service is the following:

· Calls cannot be made to campus phones from off campus.
· Calls cannot be made from campus phones to off campus numbers.
· Campus calls cannot be made to or from the campus phones in the residence halls or the Annex from campus phones.

We are working to correct the problems as soon as
possible.
